Neptune Society Columbarium, San Francisco

Neptune Society Columbarium, San Francisco

Constructed in 1898 by Bernard J.S. Cahill, the Neptune Society Columbarium is one of San Francisco’s most prized architectural treasures. A beautiful illustration of neo-classical architecture, the Columbarium features a large rotunda, intricate stained glass windows, mosaic tile floors and a total of more than 8,500 inurnment spaces.

In the early 1900s, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors issued an edict that mandated the closure and removal of all its cemeteries; the Columbarium was the sole surviving public cemetery property available to people of all faiths. In the 1980s, the Neptune Society of Northern California took stewardship of this historical treasure. After extensive renovation, the Columbarium is once again a gleaming example of neo-classical splendor, long established as the final resting place of choice for the city’s elite. Walking through the Columbarium is like reading an epic historical novel, where each unique chapter is a personalized niche.

In 2011, construction began on three new niche facilities—Hall of Olympians, Hall of Titans and Hall of Heroes—that complement the grounds surrounding the Columbarium, while preserving the elegance and grandeur of the original structure.

Located in the Richmond District, the Columbarium and the adjacent Franciscan Room and Fountain Court are the only active non-denominational cemetery properties in the city of San Francisco. Space is still available in the Columbarium, so please contact us to learn more about securing your “niche in history.” Click here to take a virtual tour of this extraordinary site, or visit us today.
